Alaskan Ethics Investigator: Palin Used Her Office for Personal Financial Gain
An ethics investigator's report leaked to the press says that Sarah Palin has been "securing unwarranted benefits and receiving improper gifts" through the legal defense fund set up for her by John Coale, the Scientologist husband of Greta Van Susteren. Reports the Anchorage Daily News: An investigator for the state Personnel Board says in his July 14 report that there is probable cause to believe Palin used or attempted to use her official position for personal gain because she authorized the creation of the trust as the "official" legal defense fund. In his report, (Thomas) Daniel said his interpretation of the ethics act is consistent with common sense. An ordinary citizen facing legal charges is not likely to be able to generate donations to a legal defense fund, he wrote. "In contrast, Governor Palin is able to generate donations because of the fact that she is a public official and a public figure. Were it not for the fact that she is governor and a national political figure, it is unlikely that many citizens would donate money to her legal defense fund." Palin's crackpot mouthpiece Meg Stapleton issued the following statement in regards to the matter, claiming that the whole thing still isn't resolved: There is no final report. The Investigator is still confidentially reviewing this matter. It appears suspect that in the final days of the Governor's term, someone would again violate the law and announce a supposed conclusion before it is reached. And, naturally, Palin took to her Twitter page to say basically the same thing: However, Thomas Daniel claims that his report is final and that the case is closed and that Palin is guilty of violating Alaskan ethics laws, so somebody's full of shit and we'll give you one guess as to who we think that person is. Lydia Hearst Murdered By Wall Street Jerk
Ohh look! Here's a really fun poppy cover of the Talking Heads' This Must Be the Place, by Miles Fisher. The video is an American Psycho homage. The "best" part? Heiress/area dope Lydia Hearst is in it, having sexy threesomes!! Yeah, it's funny because she sort of looks exactly like the weird hooker in the actual movie. (And Fisher is pretty much a deadringer for a Psycho-era Bale.) So, like her doppleganger, Hearst has a creepy threesome with Patrick Bateman and some doomed socialite. There's lots of bouncing. Look! Screencaps! I've embedded the video itself down in comments if you want to hear the surprisingly good song. New comments are good for something after all. MORE >>
Conde Nast's September: Ouch
Just after announcing it would bring in McKinsey & Co. for some horrific cost-cutting, Conde Nast has released its official projections for its crucial September ad sales. We knew the numbers would be bad; they lived up to expectations. This year Conde is not publishing its annual ad-heavy Fashion Rocks supplement, which itself significantly hurts ad pages, apart from the effects of the recession and the decline of print. Of course, Fashion Rocks was killed because of those things, so whether you should factor it into the year-over-year ad page loss is a philosophical question. But even when giving Conde the benefit of the doubt and not factoring in Fashion Rocks, the losses are grim. Best performer: Teen Vogue, -17% Worst performer: W, -47% Other notables: Vogue, -30%; Allure, -28%; Wired, -26%; Glamour, -25%; Vanity Fair, -24% Conde Nast Traveler and Architectural Digest both posted losses of well over 30%. If you include Fashion Rocks in your calculations, many of the titles' losses swell to more than 40-50%. Bad news all around. For a full chart of Conde titles, see Media Memo. MORE >>
New York's Pretty Young Things Are Turning to Crime
Robin Katz is a "sexy 25-year-old financial planner working at Chase's Midtown headquarters," according to the New York Post, who allegedly ripped off a client to the tune of $110,000 so she could spend it "shopping" and "going out." Katz is a graduate of Smith College, and to judge by her Facebook friends—who hail from Yale, Harvard, Wellesley, Princeton, the Phillips Exeter Academy, etc.—she is pretty firmly ensconced in the ranks of America's elite youth. She certainly seemed pedigreed and trustworthy enough for her clients to entrust her with hundreds of thousands of dollars. Mistake! Because she is also a gangsta who is accused of running off a fake ATM card of one of those clients and withdrawing $110,000 since last June for walking around money. According to the Post, Katz's neighbors describe her as "kinda kooky," and her MySpace page described her interests thusly: Politics: Fuck Bush Sex: Fuck Me Katz reportedly went on the lam in May, telling her bosses at Chase that she had a family emergency in California to attend to. The bank tracked her down and convinced her to come back to New York to explain what happened to the client's money; she was arrested last week and is currently in Riker's Island on $50,000 bail. According to the criminal complaint (below), cops found the ATM card and four receipts on Katz when they arrested her. Why would you keep the receipts? And according to the New York criminal courts web site, she's currently being represented by the Legal Aid Society. How far they fall, and how fast. [Via Intelligencer.] MORE >>
Report: Charges Dropped Against Henry Louis Gates
CNN is reporting that the Cambridge Police Department has dropped all charges against Harvard professor Henry Louis Gates, who was arrested last week outside his home for disorderly conduct. A neighbor snapped this photo of Gates in handcuffs during the arrest. Interestingly, one of the officers on the scene was black. UPDATE: It's official. The charge has been dropped, and the city of Cambridge released a statement calling Gates' arrest "regrettable and unfortunate." That should have been clear on Thursday of last week. Why it took until today, a full four days after the arrest, for Cambridge to do the right thing remains a mystery to us. Maybe it has something to do with the fact that the press picked up on it yesterday? Gates had been spotted by a white neighbor forcing his front door open on Thursday because the lock was broken. She called 911 assuming that he was breaking in. When the cops arrived, Gates understandably raised a fuss about racism, and was inexplicably jailed for four hours. The Cambridge Police Department refused to confirm or deny the report. MORE >>
Birthers Displeased With Reasonable Republican
Delaware Republican Congressman Mike Castle had a little town hall meeting, just to talk about some stuff with his district, but he sorta lost the crowd once a lady started waving her birth certificate to make a point about Obama See, this lady says Barack Obama is "a citizen of Kenya," and wants to know what her Representative plans to do about the fact that a Kenyan has become the president. So Castle says: "Well I don't know what comment that invites. If you're referring to the president, then he is a citizen of the United States." That is not so much what the crowd wanted to hear! (The Delaware crowd!) So they all boo him. And Castle doesn't really give a shit. "You can boo, but he is a citizen of the United States." Hah. The Republicans might eventually regret riling up the crazies, so much! MORE >>
New York Post Outraged By These Hot Nude Pixxx
The New York Post is shocked and outraged—not to mention disgusted—that some sicko perv secretly took a nude video of hot, sexy blond ESPN anchor Erin Andrews and posted it online. The Post is flabbergasted. And dismayed. Words are simply not sufficient to express the New York Post's fury at this perverted, unnatural desecration, which was first reported by our jocky sibling Deadspin. No, it will take a slide show of images from the nude video for the Post to properly communicate how livid it is at this breakdown of all that is good and moral. The powerful caption, accompanied by three Erin Andrews nooodddzzzzz: VIOLATION: ESPN sportscaster Erin Andrews (above) was the innocent victim of a perv-cam-wielding sicko who secretly took these images of her in her hotel room and posted them online. The New York Post is both nauseated and indignant. MORE >>
