The Latest on Advertisers' Tools & Methods:

Called Catalina Multi-touch AttributR, it traces a path from digital advertising — in various channels on various devices — to a purchase made in a store with a loyalty card. The company is able to track purchases down to the UPC bar code level.

It will hardly be news to readers of this site that mobile apps are tracking us on a massive scale. And yet a story in the New York Times last month about how apps are routinely monitoring users and their geographical position seems to have shocked many. Indeed, Los Angeles prosecutors were moved by the news to sue the operators of the Weather Channel app, which is owned by IBM.

Email marketers love to brag about how email marketing is still one of the most effective digital marketing mediums. But what if you don't happen to have tens of thousands of emails on hand? Or what if you want to get into the inboxes of new potential customers without…you know, breaking the law?

If you have a remarketing strategy using "Target and Bid" audiences with both positive and negative audience bid modifiers you can shape your remarketing strategy to drive traffic across the decision journey.

Congratulations, you have created the world's greatest new product or service. You have hired a world-class sales team, found product market fit, worked hard to obtain paying customers, and are distributing content via email and social to the ideal audience.

Affiliate & AdTech News:

Influencer marketing is becoming a much more established marketing technique in the affiliate world, with companies allocating funds towards celebrity endorsement of their products. Affiliates who ignore the strategy will find themselves lagging behind others who are more innovative in their approach, however the strategy may not be all it is said to be.

Staying on top of affiliate marketing trends is a full time job. If you want to maximise your ROI and stand out against your competitors, you need to be ready to change the way you think and operate in this channel. Here are my three key insights around what will influence affiliate marketing in 2019.

Private equity investment in ad tech continued to gather steam with today's announcement that Cinven has agreed to take a stake in Poland-based RTB House. It's the latest in a long line of similar deals.

The net is closing in on fraudsters preying on the online advertising industry with indictments brought against those allegedly involved in perpetrating such crimes in recent years, notably the recent 3ve case is a high profile example...

Tech Giants News:

Amazon's release Thursday at CES of a free, ad-supported streaming video channel called IMDB Freedive could provide an opportunity for the digital giant to exhibit its targeting capabilities and pose a real threat to the Facebook-Google duopoly.

Amazon has added more bid management features for Sponsored Products ads in its advertising interface. The updates take a page from the Google Ads interface, so paid search marketers will be familiar with both the automated bidding option and the page placement report Amazon has rolled out.

Everyone is doing Facebook ads. Or so it seems for most coaches. 92% of businesses advertise on Facebook, yet 62% of them reportedly fail to make money from ads. It seems only a handful of players make money through ads.

Advertisers are not leaving Facebook. But lots of them are migrating from Facebook proper to another platform it owns: Instagram. One analyst estimates that ads on Instagram will account for 70 percent of Facebook's new revenue by 2020. And the most exciting thing for the company is Stories, the little posts that expire after 24 hours.

Adblock News:

Last year, an update to the Google Chrome browser saw adblocking features added. While these did not specifically prevent adverts from appearing on websites, it did look to change those that did appear...

Ad blocking, which caused mild hysteria in 2016, no longer grabs as many headlines but is still a substantial threat on a publisher's bottom line, encouraging companies to diversify revenue sources and collaborate across the industry.

Blockchain News:

Decenter, a smart contract auditing firm, has come forward with a claim that Ethereum has been banned by Google On AdWords, its advertising platform. This comes months after Google lifted the ban on Cryptocurrency and blockchain-related ads altogether.

How much havoc does ad fraud wreak on digital advertisers? The founders of Ad Tech startup tribeOS are exhibit one. Collectively, their online businesses lost millions to fraudulent clicks, spambots and phantom views. The human cost was greater still. Businesses ruined, jobs lost, and it almost ended a life. All while the digital ad industry sat and did nothing.

Other News:

What if online ads weren't the distracting, privacy-invading, malware-laced, battery-gobbling mess they've become? What if they could even fund worthy websites? That's what startup Brave hopes to accomplish with a major new phase of its browser business.

Mobile gamers represent 88.8% of digital gamers spanning all ages and by the end of 2019, 147.8 million US mobile device owners will be playing games on their phones. That's in contrast to 91 million using digital consoles to play games. Games also continue to evolve rapidly on mobile with some of the biggest apps now being game apps. At the same time, this offers multiple opportunities for brand marketers and advertisers through in-app ads and rewarded advertising formats.

The Latest on Advertisers' Tools & Methods:

You can't talk mobile ad trends without mentioning the duopoly, and new triopoly with Amazon's entrance into the fray. 2017 served as a year of growing pains for the Facebook and Google duopoly, with agencies and advertisers finding their ad metrics to be skewed in several different business drivers....

Let's say your competitor has invested a tidy sum creating an awesome YouTube video about its sizzling hot, number-one best-selling product. The video gets tons of views. Good on the competitor. You, not so much.

Homepage traffic has been the gold standard for measuring digital marketing success for almost two decades. Marketers have optimized organic and paid search strategies to drive consumers to a brand's homepage, which digital directors structured to move visitors into an on-site experience that ended in a transaction — a purchase, a webinar registration, a job application, a newsletter sign-up, an in-store visit, or another type of conversion.

Your product is outstanding, your business is ready, and you're driving dozens of leads to your landing pages. There's only one problem: those customers aren't converting. They land on a page, click around, and then leave. You're left watching your marketing ROI drop as more and more customers land on your pages and bounce in confusion.

Affiliate & AdTech News:

Heading into 2019, I predict this will be another year of consolidation across the media landscape. From IPG buying Acxiom Marketing Solutions to WPP's move to merge J. Walter Thompson with Wunderman, to AT&T acquiring Time Warner Inc., there have been a multitude of mega-deals in the media business, this past year, which had a lot do with years of growth hitting the walls of reality.

2018 was quite a year to remember (or forget, depending on your sentiments). In the world of affiliate marketing, 2018 saw a new level of maturity in this marketing channel; from the take-over of Influencer marketing, to brands truly working with their reps to create content, and a growing share of the e-commerce marketplace.

Tech Giants News:

Every business with an online presence wants customers to quickly come across their site when they search on Google. The search engine comprises of millions of pages that makes it very competitive to have a particular page ranked high and on the first page of the search engine.

Facebook's data collecting practices have once again been called into question, after a new report revealed that it "routinely tracked" people who do not use the app. Privacy International analysed 34 apps on the Android mobile operating system with user bases of between 10 and 500 million.

Facebook's essential facility is unclear – is it a social network; a publisher of video, text, pictures and games; a communications service; or an advertising agency?

I have worked at Google, Microsoft, Amazon, and Oracle (among others). Code quality is a funny thing. In my opinion, it's situational.....

Microsoft has not had a tremendous quarter. But it has still succeeded in regaining a coveted title: most valuable public U.S. company by market cap. And even though Microsoft's product announcements still might not rivet the public like Apple's keynotes, the company has moved forward in measurable ways in 2018, following years of transition under CEO Satya Nadella.

Blockchain News:

US cable and entertainment giant Comcast's cable advertising division has launched what it describes as the next phase of an industry initiative to create a secure way to use data and share information based on blockchain technology.

Frauds in advertising can be efficiently avoided using the blockchain technology. Companies who are paying are doing so to engage their prospective customers at least for a few minutes. They pay for the engaged minutes; however, there are tales of false engagements in the advertising industry.
