GM has given the public a taste of its long-term strategy regarding this issue with the recent news that it will be closing its Hummer division. The goal of this writing is to provide a simple SWOT analysis of GM’s other truck division, GMC. The reader can draw his or her own conclusions, but I believe it to be clear that GM may want to go consider going another direction with this profitable yet gas-guzzling division. Over 100 years ago, when there were hundreds of small companies dotting the landscape of the American auto industry, the then fledgling General Motors acquired a small commercial truck manufacturer named Rapid Motor Vehicle Company. Around the same time, GM also purchased a small car company named Reliance Motor Car Company. These two companies would soon be merged to form the GMC Truck division. Since then, GMC has gone on to become one of the best known, most reliable, and most popular truck manufacturers in the world. With that brief background, we begin our SWOT analysis. As already noted above, GMC is a very popular brand name. We see GMC trucks everyday as we drive to work. We see them in peoples’ yards, their beds filled with mulch as landscapers work nearby on pretty flower beds. This is GMC’s greatest strength. This notoriety has led to GMC being GM’s second best selling division behind Chevrolet. Their trucks are also strong and durable. They are marketed to people who will use trucks as they were intended to be used. In this respect, they’ve carved themselves a sizeable niche. Another strength, believe it or not, is gas mileage. While still a V-8 guzzler, GMC and Chevy have the best EPA fuel estimates of all domestic trucks. Let’s move on to weaknesses. As I see it there are two glaring weaknesses for GMC. The first is the public perception that it GMC is the same as Chevy. This is hard to dispute as, save for a few minor cosmetic differences, the trucks are largely the same. This includes engine and package choices. One merely needs to visit each of their websites to view the minute differences. I literally built the same truck on each site. The only difference, of course, is the badge. The other major weakness for GMC is the fact that in an increasingly penny-pinching, fuel sipping society, all they make is trucks for the consumer. With sales for trucks and SUVs dropping like a penny from the Empire State Building, they are in danger of finding themselves going the way of the dodo bird. As we have seen recently with Hummer and in the not too distant past with Oldsmobile, GM is clearly not afraid to part ways with well established brands to help their bottom line. And now for opportunities. It’s pretty hard to change perceptions when for generations, you’ve been known strictly as a truck company. You’re associated with big engines, muddy trails, and construction sites. Luckily, GM has an ace up their sleeve. That ace is hybrid technology. GMC has already integrated hybrid technology into their lineup of vehicles. A strong emphasis on this technology would show the consumer that while GMC is a truck company, they are also forward thinking and environmentally conscious. They are “going green”, to use one of todays buzz words. Another opportunity for GMC lies in the SUV market. They have long been entrenched in this market, but they now have the ability to appeal to a wider demographic. Soccer moms now seem to prefer the SUV over the mini-van even with rising gas prices. A quick review of GMC’s website shows that many of their SUVs are in fact luxurious but still utilitarian. Additional opportunities exist to make strides in the compact SUV market where GMC has yet to get its feet wet. Naturally, there are numerous threats in the light-duty truck market. The market is flooded with trucks from all manufacturers claiming to have the highest payload or the most horse power. How do you differentiate? To this point, GMC has countered this threat fairly well with their “Professional Grade Trucks” ad campaign. A brilliant piece of marketing given the surplus of trucks and advertisements currently on the market. With the well known Ford F-150 having been the top seller for decades, and foreign manufacturers with their already stellar reputations for quality entering the market in recent years, it may become increasingly hard for this American icon to stay competitive. In the run-up to the launch of Wii Fit, the Nintendo marketing machine went into overdrive and the buzz surrounding the game was phenomenal but what many people seemed to miss was the real innovation behind the game, namely the Wii Balance Board. Described by some as a glorified bathroom scale, this amazing peripheral is as revolutionary as the Wii Remote was when it was first launched, and like the Wii Remote, it will have Microsoft and Sony playing catch-up as they try to bring the same functionality to their consoles. When the excitement of Wii Fit dies down, it will be the Wii Balance Board that’s remembered as the device that took gaming to the next level. But there’s quite a story behind this seemingly simple piece of kit which took months to develop and went through numerous prototypes of various shapes and sizes before it became the slim white board that’s found itself at home in living rooms the world over. A Scale For Miyamoto-sanBefore you can understand the thinking behind the balance board you need to take a step back to understand the original vision that resulted in the need for such a peripheral. That vision was thanks to Shigeru Miyamoto, Nintendo’s Senior Managing Director. As the driving force behind games such as Pikmin and Nintendogs, Shigeru developed a reputation for creating games based on his personal hobbies. Wii Fit is no exception as the original concept for the game came from his interest in weighing himself and recording his weight on a daily basis. This led to the start of a project called ‘Health Pack’ which was later to become Wii Fit. From the onset, the challenge was how to take something as simple as weighing yourself, something he enjoyed but many would see as mundane, and turn it into an activity that could be fun for the whole family. This proved to be a major challenge for the development team which, at one point, was on the verge of being broken up. Two Scales Are Better That OneProgress on the game was slow until one of the developers brought in two scales after seeing how Sumo wrestlers have to use two scales to weigh themselves and the team suddenly realised that it was quite fun trying to balance evenly on both of them. It was at this point that measuring balance became the central theme of Wii Fit and the team started to consider using balancing exercises as a means of keeping fit. Initial talks with scale manufacturers received little support and the team soon realised that they would have to develop their own device. It would also have to be more functional than an ordinary scale and so the idea developed of it measuring balance on four points. At this stage the team started to realise that it could be more than just a scale but actually a game interface. Circles, Squares And OctagonsOnce the overall concept of the balance board had been decided and that it would contain four sensors, work began on figuring out the optimum shape and size of the board together with the way it communicated with the Wii console. This proved to be a long process of trial and error and a constant battle between cost and usability. Initial prototypes of the board were circular, and then square and even at one point octagonal but it soon became apparent that these shapes were impractical especially when considering exercises like push-ups. Once again, the solution came from Miyamoto who realised that a person’s natural stance before training was to stand with their feet at about shoulder width apart so it was decided that the board would become more rectangular. The second major challenge was deciding how the balance board would communicate with the Wii console. Initially, to keep costs down it was decided that the balance board would actually connect to the Wii Remote but that was soon seen as too much of a pain and the idea dropped. Eventually it was decided to rebuild the Wii Remote’s wireless component from scratch to create a wireless module that could be built into the board itself. Once these two major obstacles had been overcome it then became a process of fine-tuning the design, making sure that the board was strong enough to stand on and that it was safe to use. The end result was the revolutionary new peripheral that we see today. What’s Next For The Wii Balance Board?Several members of the Wii Balance Board development team admitted that at first, they never really understood Shigeru Miyamoto’s vision for such a device. But as the board took shape they began to see it as more than just an accessory that could weigh players. Even before Wii Fit was launched globally there was talk internally of possible Wiiware titles and even the possibility of a balance board version of Nintendo 1080? Snowboarding. Fortunately for balance board fans, developers like Namco, EA Sports and Ubisoft have already committed to releasing exciting new titles in 2008. In fact, Namco’s We Ski was already available with the launch of Wii Fit. Games like EA Skate It and Shaun White Snowboarding have been confirmed and more games are in the works. Any excess can be refrigerated until needed. The mixture should be changed at least once a week and more frequently in very warm weather. In addition to changing the nectar, the feeder should be cleaned regularly. Since this is a sugar mixture, you are sure to attract many other nuisances you may not want to feed, such as bees, ants, and even bats. All sugars are not created equal, at least that is what the hummingbirds say. When given the choice, hummingbirds prefer artificial nectar made from cane sugar rather than beet sugars. If you are not attracting them, check and make sure the sugar you are using is cane. Ever have a problem with your feeder being full at night when you go to bed, but empty in the morning? You may think you have a sneaky neighbor taking all your nectar, but it is most likely due to bats. Bats also love the sweet nectar and can drain your feeders overnight. One strategy to keep bats out is to find bee covers for your feeder ports. The bat tongue is much larger and cannot get through the bee covers. Then again, maybe you want to feed the bats also, they eat huge amounts of insects every night, however, that’s another story. Red is very attractive to hummingbirds, so your feeder should have some red in it. Please do not use red food coloring in your homemade food. To color a sugar mixture, find a bird friendly coloring at your local birding store. Keeping desirable flowers in your garden near the feeder is also helpful in getting those little guys to frequent your feeders. Flowering plants like Columbine, Begonias and Holly Hocks, as well as Fuchsias, Coral Bells and Lantana will definitely increase your chances. Impatiens, Penstemen, and Petunias along with Geraniums and Flowering Tobacco are also favorites of hummingbirds. There are many other types of flowers hummingbirds will frequent.
