Starck Watches

[Sponsor] Demigod designer Philippe Starck has perfectly deconstructed the wristwatch by completely eliminating the center of the dial.  All that is left is a big hole where traditional timekeeping has been flushed down the horological toilet.  Surrounding the negative space where a watch once seemed to be isn't quite digital and not really analog but both do seem to co-exist in the perfectly designed Starck O-Ring Watches.  Minutes are seen as liquid crystal segments growing clockwise around the donut shaped LCD display.  The digital representation of hours show through the blocks either positively or negatively, depending where the minutes are located. Simply put, it's revolutionary. The beginning of life

By Maggie Koerth-Baker on Jul 02, 2012 12:42 pm

Sea urchin egg undergoing mitosis with fluorescent-tagged/stained DNA (blue), microtubules (green). Cells divide. One single piece of life tugs itself apart and splits in two. It sounds like a purely destructive process, reminiscent of medieval woodcuts where the hands and feet of some unfortunate thief are tied to horses heading in opposite directions. But that's ...

Anderson Cooper: "I'm gay"

By Rob Beschizza on Jul 02, 2012 12:20 pm

TV's first out news anchor: "It's become clear to me that by remaining silent on certain aspects of my personal life for so long, I have given some the mistaken impression that I am trying to hide something - something that makes me uncomfortable, ashamed or even afraid. This is distressing because it is simply ...

Shamans of the modern age

By Ju-min Park on Jul 02, 2012 11:57 am

Colorful flags snapped in the sea breeze as more than a dozen Korean shamans, dressed in bright colors, danced and chanted prayers in front of a huge cow's head stuck to a trident. The ceremony on a ship was designed to exorcise demons that threaten fishermen and bring good luck to everybody on board. The ...

VLC, the world's greatest video player, is now in beta for Android. It's a bit shaky, but it's also amazing news. (via LifeHacker)

Giant frogfish and its egg raft, and other strange reef fishes

By David Pescovitz on Jul 02, 2012 11:27 am

This is a giant frogfish with its floating egg raft, a mass of mucus laden with eggs. The rare photo appears in "Reef Fishes of the East Indies," a huge new book set detailing 2,500 fishes of the area based on more than 60 years of research. The collection also describes 25 newly-described species. See ...

HOWTO become a security expert, Bruce Schneier style

By Cory Doctorow on Jul 02, 2012 11:23 am

Brian Krebs is conducting a series of interviews with computer experts on how they got into the field and what they'd advise others to do if they want to break in themselves. The first one, an interview with Thomas Ptacek, ran last month. The latest is from Bruce Schneier: In general, though, I have three ...

Last push to kill ACTA: act now or the Internet gets it

By Cory Doctorow on Jul 02, 2012 11:18 am

This Wednesday is the make-or-break moment for ACTA, the corrupt, secretly negotiated Internet copyright treaty. Wednesday is when the European Parliament will vote on ACTA, and it's a close thing. We need Europeans to write and call their MEPs and tell them that ACTA is not fit for purpose, nor will any Internet treaty negotiated ...

Golden Retriever's modular synth immersions, and Stumptown Coffee

By David Pescovitz on Jul 02, 2012 11:08 am

When he's not exploring the finest coffee roasts, Stumptown Coffee's Jonathan Sielaff is half of modular synthesis duo Golden Retriever. Sielaff and collaborator Matt Carlson have just released their latest multi-layered adventure in monophonic synthesizers and bass clarinet, titled Occupies with the Unspoken. Pre-order the CD or LP from Thrill Jockey and you'll receive a ...

Story of Jaws, the painting

By David Pescovitz on Jul 02, 2012 10:35 am

It's one of the most iconic images of 1970s Hollywood. Roger Kastel was the painter who riffed on book illustrator Paul Bacon's original Doubleday Books cover (above left) for Peter Benchley's Jaws to create the famous oil painting that appeared on the paperback and 1975 movie post (above right). Over at Collector's Weekly, our pal ...

I've signed the Declaration of Internet Freedom, a short, to-to-point manifesto for a free and open Internet. It's attracted some very august signatories, including Amnesty International, Hackers and Founders, Global Voices, Mozilla, the NY Tech Meetup, Personal Democracy, Fight for the Future, Yochai Benkler, danah boyd, Neil Gaiman, Amanda Palmer, Aaron Swartz and Jonathan Zittrain. ...

Hitler cat snack

By Rob Beschizza on Jul 02, 2012 09:44 am

Prompted by yesterday's "marketing vs. reality" Nutrisystem moment, Simon Jenkins sent in this photo, whereby opening a snack reveals its cuddly corporate mascot to be none other than the evil Hitler Cat. [View full size at Flickr]

Nexus 7 "the first Android Tablet" worth buying

By Rob Beschizza on Jul 02, 2012 08:58 am

At The Verge, Joshua Topolsky offers a positive write-up of Google's new 7-inch tablet. Aimed more at Kindle's Fire than Apple's iPad, the $200 Nexus 7 nevertheless feels more like the latter than the former: "Google's Nexus 7 isn't just an excellent tablet for $200. It's an excellent tablet, period. In fact, it's the first ...

Cloud rapture leaves behind tech titans

By Rob Beschizza on Jul 02, 2012 08:47 am

Some of those who brought us the computer revolution seem to have lost their way in a world of cloud services, mobiles and flagship consumer products. Quentin Hardy profiles cashflow-rich but prospect-poor corporations such as Dell and HP. [New York Times] The latest data point: HP cancelled plans to release Windows RT tablets in the ...

Rainbow school remodel

By Cory Doctorow on Jul 02, 2012 08:40 am

Palatre & Leclère did this spectacular remodel on the Ecole Maternelle Pajol in Paris's 18th arrondissement. As Tuija Seipell writes on The Cool Hunter: "The building has kept its 1940s brick-wall feel, yet it radiates exuberance and has an up-to-date energy. Most likely its current users feel it was built just for them." Ecole Maternelle ...

BronyCon

By Rob Beschizza on Jul 02, 2012 08:23 am

Bronies, gathered this weekend at BronyCon, are apparently getting a bad rap in the media: "Outside the convention center, young men danced and sang along with songs from My Little Pony cartoon that blasted from loud speakers as a video screen on a large truck showed the show's characters. One observer said it almost felt ...

By Cory Doctorow on Jul 02, 2012 07:39 am

Philip Harris's beautiful illustrated alphabet, From A to B and through to Z is a grotesque wonder of animals acting out different trades, and each drawing is more fabulous than the last. Mr Harris has graciously provided us with five of these, at a high enough resolution that you can really see the awesomeness: D ...

Funnyjunk's lawyer asks judge to stop charitable donation through IndieGoGo by The Oatmeal

By Cory Doctorow on Jul 01, 2012 02:39 pm

Charles Carreon, the lawyer whose baseless legal threats against webcomic The Oatmeal made him an Internet laughingstock, is now seeking an injunction ordering IndieGoGo not to disburse the more than $220,000 donated by Oatmeal fans to a fundraiser for the American Cancer Society and National Wildlife Foundation that was started to mock Carreon and his ...
