Watchismo

[Sponsor] You gotta see this one...the watch hands float in space as if in zero gravity! Each M-Theory Time & Space watch has a video showing the uncanny time display so be sure to check them out--> M-Theory Time&Space Zero Gravity Watches at Watchismo. Time&Space is a wristwatch designed with the concept of the dissolution of time and space in a zero gravity state. Photographs of the full moon taken in Nantes of Western France by the Astrophotographer Norbert Rumiano were used on the dial plate of the Moonlight model, and the watch hands appear as if they are floating over the moon face. The modern reinterpretation of classic clock hands provide users with a surreal experience of having time float in air.

A man hiking in Ogden, Utah snapped this photo of a fellow who apparently was wearing a goat suit and socializing with a herd of real goats. The Division of Wildlife Services is concerned for the man's safety. From KSTU: "He was clumsy, working his way down the cliff trying to catch up with the ...

US stonewalling treaty that would help disabled people access copyrighted works

By Cory Doctorow on Jul 23, 2012 12:50 pm

The World Intellectual Property Organization has been working on a treaty to protect the rights of disabled people with regard to copyright since 1985. Most of the world's rich countries and developing nations support this work. However, two key entities are stonewalling and holding up the treaty: the European Commission (despite strong support from the ...

Minecraft, the Metaverse, and 3D printing

By Mark Frauenfelder on Jul 23, 2012 12:46 pm

Over at our sponsor Intel's My Life Scoop site, I wrote about Minecraft, the Metaverse, and 3D printing: When I started playing Minecraft with my kids last year, I immediately thought of the Metaverse — the shared virtual reality system in Neal Stephenson's now-classic 1992 science fiction novel, Snow Crash. The Metaverse was a simulated ...

Eagle Scouts stand up to the Boy Scouts of America

By Maggie Koerth-Baker on Jul 23, 2012 11:10 am

If you aren't familiar with American Boy Scouting's Eagle Scout award, it might be a little hard to explain how important this story really is. Eagle Scout is a big deal. For one thing, it takes a lot of work to get the position. A scout has to earn 21 merit badges and then spearhead ...

Massive Bigfoot model on eBay

By David Pescovitz on Jul 23, 2012 09:49 am

In 1976, a fellow named Clifford LaBrecque built this "museum quality" model of Bigfoot and now he's selling it on eBay. "One look and it shouts this is the "real thing"--eyes that follow you, and hands, fingers, and toes, are all in great detail," reads the auction listing. Starting bid is just $80,000. I sure ...

Motivational speaker fails to motivate 21 people to walk over hot coals fast enough

By Rob Beschizza on Jul 23, 2012 09:04 am

Photo: Randy Stewart (cc) Twenty-one were burned by hot coals at a seminar hosted by motivational speaker Tony Robbins. Carol Pogash at The New York Times describes the cultish atmosphere of victim-blaming (including by themselves) after the show, which included a "performance coach" going on about the uselessness of modern medicine. Mr. Robbins was not ...

By Cory Doctorow on Jul 22, 2012 10:45 pm

Here's a video of the 1972 Gesundheit Radio "sneezing," a function it was programmed to perform twice annually in order to clear the dust from its sensitive components. TIL that in 1972 a radio was designed that 'sneezed' every 6 months in order to protect the microprocessors from dust (vimeo.com)

Mitt Romney promises a chicken in every pot and a porn filter on every PC (except for the chicken)

By Cory Doctorow on Jul 22, 2012 08:42 pm

Here's Mr Romney on the campaign trail in 2007, in Radar O'Reilly's hometown of Ottumwa, Iowa, demonstrating his mastery of First Amendment jurisprudence and the nature of the technology industry -- as well as the technical feasibility of pornography filters -- promising mandatory game-rating systems (with a prohibition on their sales to kids) and a ...

Realtime Mitt Romney wealth accumulation calculator

By Cory Doctorow on Jul 22, 2012 07:54 pm

The "Mitt Romney just made" page is a running calculator that shows a realtime estimate of Romney's earnings while you watch (He made $940.38 while I wrote a couple of blog posts and got a bowl of cereal for my daughter). It also lets you calculate your own Romney earnings. For example, making a 10-minute ...

Here's a long, long photoset of imakethenews and his girlfriend doing a complete teardown and rebuild of a seriously decayed 1975 Serro Scotty Sportsman teardrop camper trailer. The rebuild is clever, sensitive and ingenious, and the result is a an up-to-date but still nostalgic masterpiece. 1965 Serro Scotty Sportsman (via Digg)

Winston Churchill in a bathing suit

By Cory Doctorow on Jul 22, 2012 05:47 pm

It's not clear to me whether this photo of Winston Churchill in a bathing suit comes from 1911 or 1922 -- the title of the How to Be a Retronaut page is ambiguous -- but either way, he cut a fine figure of a man. Winston Churchill in his swimsuit, 1911/1922

The crime was abetted by a network of "enablers" from banks like UBS, Credit Suisse and Goldman Sachs. Much of the money has ...

By Mark Frauenfelder on Jul 22, 2012 01:22 pm

[Video Link] I met Brett Hamilton when I blindly hired him through Taskrabbit to help me move some monstrously heavy armoires. While we were giving ourselves hernias I learned that he is the bassist for Falling Still, and I've been enjoying their music ever since. Here's their latest video, for a song called "If U ...
