Dept. of Defense and Homeland Security confirm Lockheed Martin hacker breach Posted: 28 May 2011 06:22 PM PDT Reuters has a followup to their scoop yesterday about an unspecified hacker attack involving Lockheed Martin, the world's biggest aerospace firm and the top US military supplier by sales: the DoD and the DHS are now involved, and confirm that a breach took place. As reported yesterday, the Lockheed intrusion may be linked to the RSA SecurID breach disclosed two months ago. Reuters reports today: The Department of Homeland Security said it and the Defense Department had offered to help gauge the scope of a "cyber incident impacting LMCO," as the maker of fighter jets, ships and other major weapons systems is known. The U.S. government also has offered to help analyze "available data in order to provide recommendations to mitigate further risk," Chris Ortman, a Homeland Security official, said in an e-mailed reply to a query from Reuters. No word yet on whether other military contractors that also use RSA's SecurID system have experienced similar problems.

Life at a brainwashing "school for troubled teens" Posted: 27 May 2011 11:00 PM PDT Tyrsalvia sez, "This detailed and heart-wrenching account of life in a 'boarding school for troubled teens' has me shaking with rage. Kids are sent to these places for everything ranging from 'having low self esteem' to having been caught with drugs, to being gay or otherwise 'weird.' While there, they are abused and taught to abuse each other in a way I can only describe as Stanley Milgram meets George Orwell." On May 10th of 2007 at around 2:30 in the morning two strangers barged into my bedroom. I started screaming and crying, as in my mind I was sure that these two strangers had broken into my house and were going to abduct me, rape me, kill me, or in some way harm me. They immediately told me that if I did not shut up that they would handcuff me. I was not being in any way violent or threatening. I was reacting in fear for my life by being vocal and hoping that someone would come to help. I had no idea what was going on. I stopped screaming, still in fear for my life. They started going through my closet digging out clothes as I was only in a night gown. They still had not explained what was going on. I asked, frightened, what the wanted from me, trying to see if I could in some way appease them and get them to leave. They then explained that they were going to take me to a school. It took me a second to understand what they meant by this, as this was an extremely bizarre way to introduce a child to a new school. It then occurred to me that this was what my mother had arranged for my brother several years ago when she had him shipped away to Cross Creek. The two strangers were from Teen Escort Service, a for-profit company that transports teenagers, usually by force, to WWASP (World Wide Association of Specialty Programs) facilities.A gay teen describes her experience at a Utah brainwashing facility (Thanks, tyrsalvia!) |
Wonderfully creepy Pinocchio marionette from upcoming Del Toro/Gus Grimly movie Posted: 27 May 2011 10:53 PM PDT Gris Grimly is directing a Jim Henson/Guillermo Del Toro adaptation of Pinocchio. Grimly illustrated my all-time favorite edition of Pinocchio, really capturing the dark, perverse humor of Collodi's original. Judging from this sneak peek at a replica of one of marionettes to be used in the stop-motion production, it's going to be faithful to his weird and wonderful vision. Psychic TV sold VWs in 1995 with a song about Roman Polanski. Posted: 28 May 2011 01:02 PM PDT [Video Link, and Amazon Link to buy the MP3.] Drivers Wanted. Today I was reminded, via Twitter, that a Volkswagen television ad in 1995 for family-friendly cars featured a song by Genesis Breyer P-Orridge and Psychic TV about rapist-pedophile-filmmaker Roman Polanski. Now that's an art hack. (Thanks, @thepegisin and @cwoodfield)

Rustoleum Epoxy Appliance Paint Posted: 28 May 2011 04:21 AM PDT I learned about this spray paint a while ago from an old gent that restores appliances. The paint is a super-hard washable epoxy coating for appliances that have scuffed or discolored surfaces. The spray paint goes on very smoothly; I've used 4 cans worth, and have not had any drips or runs. I used it first on an old refrigerator, the front of a gas stove and the vent above. Heat doesn't seem to bother it, or at least it hasn't bubbled. The paint dries in about 2 hours to a touchable surface, but it is best to let it sit for a few hours, and it really looks good. Price at Home Depot was $6.00 a can, same as any other Rustoleum product. It comes in several colors and can also be purchased, apparently, in gallon cans. For the price it is hard to beat, and for this application I haven't seen any comparable product that works as well. It is a very easy and practical way to refurbish old appliances. My wife even likes it. [Note: For those looking for higher heat applications, Rustoleum makes a high-heat enamel spray for restoring grills and other hot appliances that can withstand a wider temperature range.--OH] -- Stephen Young Rustoleum Epoxy Spray Paint $9 The comments over at Cool Tools indicate that not only is this stuff good for restoring appliances, but that it tends to hold up better than other spray paints. And don't forget to submit a tool! |
